The sanctuary of the Grass Valley United Methodist Church pulsed with energy on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as Tom Rigney & Flambeau delivered an unforgettable performance for the Church Street Concert Series. The sold-out audience was treated to a night of dazzling musicianship, contagious joy, and the unmistakable spirit of Louisiana’s Cajun and Zydeco traditions—all in the intimacy of one of Nevada County’s most beloved listening rooms.

From the moment Rigney’s fiddle let loose on the opening tune, the evening crackled with excitement. Backed by his powerhouse band, Flambeau, Rigney led the audience on a musical journey that swept through the bayous, dance halls, and street parades of New Orleans. The group’s blend of Cajun two-steps, Zydeco shuffles, swampy blues, and original compositions filled the historic church with irresistible rhythm and warmth.

Adding to the festive spirit, a local swing dance group brought the music to life with joyful, high-energy dancing at the front of the church. Their lively moves and infectious enthusiasm perfectly matched the band’s rhythms, transforming the sanctuary into a scene reminiscent of a Louisiana dance hall. The dancers’ presence drew cheers and applause, inspiring the seated audience to clap, tap, and sway along in time with the music. It was a vivid reminder of how deeply Rigney’s music connects musicians, dancers, and listeners alike.

Rigney, ever the charismatic frontman, was in peak form—his fiery violin solos alternated between fierce and tender, often earning spontaneous applause mid-song. Between numbers, he charmed the crowd with humor and storytelling, sharing snippets about the origins of Louisiana music and the inspirations behind his own compositions. His genuine enthusiasm was infectious; by the second set, the entire audience was swept up in the rhythm, laughing, clapping, and joining in the fun.

Flambeau’s ensemble playing was nothing short of spectacular. The band’s accordion player brought authentic Zydeco flair, weaving intricate melodic lines around Rigney’s fiddle. The rhythm section—tight, driving, and soulful—anchored every song with grooves that made it impossible not to move. Each member had their moment in the spotlight, showing off world-class musicianship while keeping the focus on the collective sound.

The acoustics of the Grass Valley United Methodist Church lent an extra dimension to the evening. The warm resonance of the wood interior gave the fiddle and accordion a luminous presence, while the close proximity of the audience created an atmosphere of shared celebration.

Highlights of the night included Rigney’s original ballad “Blue Bayou Waltz,” which drew hushed attention, and a rollicking encore that brought everyone to their feet. The combination of exquisite musicianship, heartfelt expression, and the spontaneous joy of dance made this concert one for the books.

As the final notes faded and the crowd rose for a standing ovation, it was clear that something special had happened. The Church Street Concert Series once again delivered on its promise to bring world-class artistry to a local stage, and Tom Rigney & Flambeau left their mark as one of the most entertaining and inspiring acts ever to grace it.
